Surveillance Video Shows Teen Fleeing The Scene After Running Over Man In Wheelchair

An incident in Texas that caught the attention of many people online involved a teen and a man in a wheelchair. It was all recorded on surveillance cameras and shared all across the internet. It was not an act of kindness or a good deed but something horrifying.

The hit-and-run incident happened around 10 o’clock in the morning of September 3, 2022. This happened in a parking lot on North Lamar Boulevard in Austin, Texas.

After the driver exhibits behavior that suggests he is driving dangerously, the victim can be seen on video signaling for him to slow down, but he didn’t. Instead, the teenager ran over the man and dragged him through a parking lot before fleeing the scene.

Thankfully, an Austin Fire Department crew saw what was happening and was quick to approach and help the victim. Due to the incident, the victim suffered life-threatening injuries. He was immediately taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The teen on the now-viral video is 17-year-old Pablo Antonio Avila-Banagas.

On September 9, 2022, he was arrested by the Austin Police Department. He has been charged with failure to stop and render aid (serious bodily injury), a third-degree felony; injury to a disabled person, a second-degree felony; unlawful carry of a firearm, a Class A misdemeanor; and also failure to identify concerning this case, a Class B misdemeanor. He is being tried as an adult and is scheduled to appear in court this November.

The investigation is still ongoing at this time. Anyone with additional details is urged to contact the authorities.

Inside Edition covered the story and shared the footage on YouTube. Viewed over 300,000 times, many could not help but comment on the incident, especially how the teen just ran over the helpless man.

One commenter wrote: “That teen just threw his life away. This was clearly intentional and it breaks my heart knowing that people like him tend to lack respect for anything anymore.” Another said, “He literally turned into him. That’s not just a simple mistake or lack of attention. Hope that guy makes it and that teen gets solid time cause that’s intolerable.” This commenter wrote: “what kind of awful human would do such a horrible thing to another human, this breaks my heart.” And this viewer wrote: “I just don’t understand how people can be this heartless to another person. That was deliberate and for what?! My prayers go out to the victim.”

Others are also praying for the victims’ recovery. A viewer said: “This is absolutely heartbreaking. My heart goes out to that disabled gentleman, and I hope he is able to recover.” Another wrote: “Poor guy, I hope his conditions get better. He didn’t deserve this. WHAT DID THAT MAN EVER DO TO YOU?!!”

Hit and run incidents happen, but most of the time, they are not deliberately done…

In 2015, there were 737,100 recorded accidents involving hit-and-run drivers. There are some alarming statistics regarding accidents involving hit-and-run motorists. According to the data of a research conducted by the AAA, hit-and-run accidents are responsible for more than 5% of all road fatalities throughout history. While 20% of pedestrian crash fatalities can be attributed to drivers of vehicles that are fleeing the scene of the accident.
