Rick Hoyt, a beloved figure known for participating in the Boston Marathon and other races with his father pushing his wheelchair, has passed away at the age of 61. His family announced that he died due to complications with his respiratory system. Rick, who had cerebral palsy and was quadriplegic, along with his father Dick, became renowned in the road race and triathlon communities, inspiring millions of people with disabilities to believe in themselves and achieve extraordinary feats.

Rick and Dick Hoyt’s presence in the Boston Marathon was as iconic as sore feet or Heartbreak Hill. The father-son duo completed the marathon course together an impressive 32 times. Their remarkable journey and spirit led the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) to establish the Rick & Dick Hoyt Award, presented annually in April to individuals who demonstrate the same advocacy and inclusion values as the Hoyts.

The BAA expressed its deep appreciation for Rick Hoyt, recognizing him as a Boston Marathon icon and the embodiment of the “Yes You Can” mentality that defined Team Hoyt. They acknowledged him as a friend, mentor, pioneer, and Boston Marathon finisher, emphasizing their gratitude for the privilege of knowing him.

Beyond the Boston Marathon, Rick and Dick Hoyt participated in over 1,000 other races, including duathlons and triathlons. Tragically, Dick Hoyt passed away in 2021, leaving behind a legacy that will never fade. Their story continues to inspire millions worldwide. He praised Rick for his courage, determination, tenacity, and selflessness, acknowledging the profound impact he had on others’ lives.
