Puppy Found In Dumpster Finds His Forever Home Filled With Love Before Passing Away

Not every dog is lucky to find a forever home. But for ChiChi, despite nearly losing all of her legs and even close to losing her life, her fate will not end there. This special dog was going to continue living despite her injuries. And this golden retriever ended up becoming a therapy dog and named the American Humane’s 2018 American Hero Dog.
But what happened to ChiChi? How did she overcome the trials that came her way?
ChiChi had a horrific start. In 2016, ChiChi was left to die in a dumpster in South Korea. She was found inside a garbage bag with her legs tied together by a wire. Through her struggle, the wire is already earing away into her skin.
Somebody called the Animal Rescue, Media & Education reporting about a potential meat farm where the pooch was found. This was through the Nabiya Irion Hope Project. It is an animal welfare group based in South Korea. ChiChi was very lucky that she was found. She was very scared and severely injured.
ChiChi was brought to the hospital where she received the needed treatment. All of her four limbs were amputated right above the paw. But her predicament did not end there. She still needed to be rehabilitated. She would also need four custom-designed prosthetic limbs to help her learn how to walk again.
The ARME shared a video about ChiChi. And this is how Elizabeth Howell from Arizona learned about her. She immediately knew that she wanted to take this brave dog home. During an interview with TODAY, Elizabeth said that ChiChi stole her heart.
After a few weeks, ChiChi arrived in Arizona where she was fitted for the prosthetics. This became a great challenge for her because her legs were amputated at different heights. She did a bit of trial and error until she found the right fit that helped her move up and moving more quickly than they all expected.
In a statement released by the American Humane, Elizabeth explained, “When people meet Chi Chi, they are inspired by her courage, perseverance, ability to overcome adversity and her never-give-up attitude. She exemplifies resilience and forgiveness, and openly shares her love and compassion in abundance. Her sweet-tempered and gentle spirit opens people’s hearts and her perceptive spirit senses where her love is needed.”
When ChiChi fully recovered, she then proceeded to become a therapy dog. She would often visit assisted-living facilities, youth, veterans, and other amputees that needed her.
After ChiChi was awarded the Hero Dog honour, this is what her owner has to say about her amazing dog. “Chi-Chi is truly a gift from God. And we are grateful for every day she is here to abundantly share her love and inspire us to never give up,” Elizabeth said.
Despite the sad and traumatic life that ChiChi had, she continued to change other people’s lives. She would put a smile on other people’s faces everywhere she visits. This dog was a living example of compassion, perseverance, and love.
Sadly, ChiChi was diagnosed with an aggressive tumour in her nasal cavity in 2018. And in February 2019, she passed away.
ChiChi may be gone for now, but her legacy will forever remain. She will always be remembered by those people whose lives she touched and changed for the better.
