Police Shot And Killed A Gunman Who Opened Fire At Texas Children’s Summer Camp

Texas was once again shaken by another shooting incident where children’s lives were once again in danger. During the incident, police shot and killed the man who opened fire inside a Texas summer camp where over a hundred children were present.

This event takes place just a few weeks after a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in which 19 students and two teachers lost their lives. Police in Uvalde, Texas, have come under fire for their response to the May 24 shooting, which included waiting more than an hour to confront the alleged gunman while students were still inside.

But this time, the police were quick to respond to the incident.

According to reports, the man reportedly fired his weapon into a room that was filled with children at the Duncanville Fieldhouse, just outside Dallas. An emergency call was placed and police arrived on the scene just two minutes later.

Thankfully, aside from the gunman, no one else was injured in the shooting.

Where the incident happened is a sports camp for kids ages 4 to 14. At the time, about 150 participants were in the building when the man opened fire.

The police department explained: “Officers quickly located and exchanged gunfire with a suspect armed with a handgun. The suspect was wounded during the exchange.”

The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

In an interview with ABC News, one young camper named Autumn who was present during the shooting incident said that she was hiding in the shower with others. She said, “He went into the room, and then we heard shooting. And then we got scared and everyone started crying.”

Duncanville Assistant Chief of Police Matthew Stogner spoke at a press conference regarding the incident. He explained that the man was able to enter the building “through the main lobby doors with a handgun.” He said, “It appears that a staff member and he exchanged — whether it’s discussions, a talk, but that was the initial gunfire.” This alerted the others that there was an active shooter.

Stogner also added that the counselors at the camp immediately sprung into action and started “moving children to a safe area and locking doors.”

A camp counselor confronted the suspected gunman in the lobby of the indoor sports and fitness center. Stogner adds, “The suspect went to a classroom, was unable to get inside, and fired one round into the classroom where there were children inside.”

The suspect then made his way into the gymnasium but he did not fire any of his weapons. He was there when the police arrived. They confronted the shooter, and after exchanging gunfire which resulted in the gunman’s death.

The police department said, “Camp and Fieldhouse staff followed lockdown procedures. Due to the clear-headed actions of staff and the quick response time of law enforcement, there were no additional injuries. Duncanville Police officers followed their training, and the City commends them for their actions today.”

Police have revealed the identity of the man. According to Duncanville police, the gunman was 42-year-old Brandon Keith Ned of Dallas.

Other than that, the police said no other information would be released at this time including a possible motive. They also said that an ongoing investigation by the Texas Rangers is being done.

Chief of Police Matthew Stogner praised the responsiveness shown by the police officers as well as their usage of their active shooter training.
