Elisabeth Nordgarden and her little boy named Kristoffer love to spend time outdoors. Nobody can ever think that something bad would happen when you are only enjoying the bright sunshine in your backyard.

One day, her 3-year-old son ran to her crying. She never thought that it was something that she should worry about. She said, “Me and the boys were visiting my grandparents. Then Kristoffer began to cry a little and climbed onto my lap. We thought he had been stung by a wasp or scratched himself on a branch.”

But 15 minutes later, her foot started turning blue in color and it was swelling. At first, she thought it was only a sting from a wasp, but it got worse. His entire body was covered in blue patches and this is when she realized more than a wasp sting. It was something else because a simple wasp sting is not going to cause this much worry.

When the boy was brought to the hospital, he was already suffering from internal bleeding in his intestine. The doctors measured the boys’ blood values. They found it at 5 which should be at 11 which is the standard for his age. He quickly lost weight – from 44 to 33.

As it turned out, her son was bitten by a viper snake!

Remember that each body has a different reaction to a viper snake bite. Kids are the most vulnerable and can experience lethal reactions from this bite. Dr. Achterberg said that it is very important to keep calm if you ever get bitten by a viper snake or other venomous snakes. It is important that you know which ones are more prevalent from where you are from.

In the colder months, the viper snakes’ metabolisms are lower and they hide somewhere safe. And during the summer months, they would come out and enjoy the warmer temperatures. Petter Bochman explained, “Vipers are much more active in the summer. More people are also out in nature, and therefore there are greater chances of encountering one.

” It is advisable that when you go outdoors, it is best to wear shoes or boots. This can give you and your kids’ feet more protection from snake bites.

It was definitely a traumatic experience for both mother and son, but Kristopher recovered after 1 ½ weeks at the hospital. He was able to go home but his recovery period at the hospital was very difficult for a child. But mom said that the boy seems to be taking the entire experience well.

When he was back home, he started playing as if nothing happened. The mother assured that from now on, she would be more cautious especially when she and her son are outside.

She said, “I have much more respect for vipers now and I will ensure that my kids wear boots when they go out in areas with high grass in the future.”

Wild creatures only strike when provoked. But when it comes to snakes, they can be unpredictable sometimes. That is why it is best to be extra careful especially during the warmer months when they would come out from hiding and are more vicious since they are hungry and hunting for food.
