An influencer mom recently found herself in the midst of a social media storm after her unconventional choice of name for her baby was met with ridicule and harsh criticism online.
Popular Instagram influencer, Kaitlin Brown, who boasts over 80,000 followers, had announced the arrival of her new baby on social media and had revealed the name she had chosen for her daughter – ‘Halyn’.
The name, which is a unique combination of two popular names, Hayley and Lynn, was meant to be a tribute to both the baby’s grandmothers, who shared those names.
However, the seemingly harmless name soon became the subject of heated debate and ridicule on social media, with many users labeling it as “ugly,” “ridiculous” and “stupid.” Several people also criticized the name, saying it was too difficult to pronounce or spell correctly.
The criticism and negativity quickly took a toll on Brown, who was left devastated by the harsh comments. In an emotional video posted on her Instagram story, the influencer broke down in tears, saying that she never expected such an intense backlash over her baby’s name.
“I’ve been sitting here crying for hours. I didn’t think that Halyn was that weird of a name,” she said.
Brown also addressed the criticism head-on, saying that the name was a tribute to her mother and mother-in-law, who had been extremely supportive throughout her pregnancy. She also urged people to be more kind and understanding, especially towards new mothers.
“I just think it’s really sad that people have to be so cruel and make fun of a baby’s name. I think that there’s no need for that. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to say anything at all. It’s just really hurtful and I don’t know what to do about it,” she said.
Despite the backlash, Brown has refused to change her daughter’s name, saying that she stands by her decision and is proud of the name she chose for her baby.
“I love my daughter’s name. I think it’s beautiful and I’m not going to change it just because some people don’t like it,” she said.
The incident has sparked a larger conversation about the impact of social media on new mothers and their babies. Many have expressed concern over the intense scrutiny and criticism that mothers face online, and the pressure to conform to societal norms when it comes to naming their children.
Some experts have also weighed in on the issue, saying that while social media can be a valuable tool for new parents, it can also be a breeding ground for negativity and criticism.
“This is a perfect example of how social media can be both a blessing and a curse for new parents. On the one hand, it can be a great way to connect with other parents and get support and advice. But on the other hand, it can also be a very harsh and judgmental place, especially when it comes to things like baby names,” said Dr. Laura Riley, an OB-GYN at Weill Cornell Medicine.
The incident has also sparked a debate about the importance of respecting parents’ decisions when it comes to naming their children, and the need for greater empathy and understanding towards new mothers.
As for Brown, she says she is determined to move on from the incident and focus on being the best mother she can be to her daughter.
“I’m not going to let this get me down. I’m going to keep being a proud mom and loving my daughter no matter what,” she said
