Missing Blind Senior Dog Loses It When He Finally Smells His Family Again
Three years ago, a 15-year-old senior dog named Binky, also known as Mr. B., went missing when he slipped out of his family’s front door during a move. Despite their efforts to find him, they were unable to locate Binky, who was medically fragile. The family had to eventually proceed with their move, but they held onto hope as Binky had a microchip with their contact information.
Recently, the family received unexpected news. Binky had been found wandering in Summerville, South Carolina, miles away from his home state of Georgia. He was in a rough state, with severely matted fur, especially around his eyes, making it difficult to determine if he still had eyes. His nails were overgrown, emitting a foul odor, and his teeth were decaying.
Fortunately, a Good Samaritan who found Binky reached out to Dorchester Paws, an animal shelter. The shelter quickly stepped in to help the senior dog. Binky was taken to a vet clinic, where he received immediate attention. The medical team shaved off the matted fur and started him on necessary medications, which provided him relief.
Despite his physical condition, Binky maintained a friendly and relieved demeanor at the shelter. During the grooming process, the veterinary team scanned Binky for a microchip, and to their delight, it produced a match. The shelter director, April Howard, dialed the number associated with the microchip and informed Binky’s family that their beloved dog was alive and safe. The family was astonished and initially questioned if it was truly Binky due to his advanced age.
Although Binky’s family lived six hours away from the shelter, the devoted staff didn’t let distance hinder the reunion. One of Binky’s caregivers loaded him into their truck and drove him back home. The family’s tears flowed as they laid eyes on their tiny, resilient pup once again. Binky, now 18 years old and mostly blind and deaf, sensed his family’s presence through their scent. Overjoyed, he showered them with wet kisses, feeling the love and relief in the air. Binky was finally back where he belonged.
The following weeks were filled with happiness for Binky and his family. They made up for lost time by showering him with love and affection, cherishing every moment. However, sadly, Binky’s health started deteriorating not long after his rescue. His family remained by his side as he peacefully crossed the rainbow bridge, grateful that they were able to spend his final days together.
Binky’s family expressed their gratitude for the reunion, something they had never thought possible. The director of Dorchester Paws described the event as heartwarming, though she believed the word didn’t do justice to the depth of emotion involved. The family cherished the time they had with Binky, knowing that his return home had given them a precious gift.
