Some horses are larger than the others, while some have a more powerful stride. There are also horses that have characteristics that no other horses have. Just like the horses from Turkmenistan.

These unique horses are beautiful beyond words. They are called the Akhal-Teke.

The Akhal-Teke stands around 14. 2 and 16 hands. These horses are not only known for their size, but also of their unique coat. When it reflects the light, it looks almost like metal. That is why they are nicknamed the “Golden Horse” because of their golden buckskin or palomino colour which is a result of the creme gene.

According to the breed enthusiasts, this colour pattern serves as the horses’ camouflage in the desert. Many of these horses have a natural metallic sheen coat colour and is typically noticeable to those with cream gene colours. They are a very rare breed of horse and for sure, you can say that they are different from the ones that you usually see.

They are easy to spot because unlike other horses, the Akhal-Teke has refined heads with a straight or slightly convex profile. They also have long ears and almond-shaped eyes. Their long backs are lightly muscled and they have long and upright necks. These horses have sloping shoulders and thin skin.

The Akhal-Teke is not only beautiful but they are also resilient and tough. They have already adapted to the Turkmenistan lands where they live without much food and water. And because of their lean build, they are good for sports. They are known for their endurance.

According to facts, there are only about 6,000 of these horses worldwide, and most are in Russia. But they can also be found in Europe and North America. And because of their shining blonde coats, the Akhal-Teke is known as the “horses from heaven” in China. And each of them has unique characteristics in their hair which makes them more breathtakingly beautiful.

There are different theories regarding the original ancestry of these Golden Horses. Some of them date back thousands of years. There is a huge possibility that these horses are descendants of an older breed called the Turkoman Horse. Some even claim that they are the same breed.

The tribes of Turkmenistan did selective breeding on their horses. This breed of horses was used in the losing fight against the Russian Empire. The Turkoman also influenced other breeds like modern warmbloods. But there is also a possibility that the Akhal-Tekes today come from the Thoroughbred line.

If you are wondering how these horses have shiny coats? That is because of how the proteins arrange themselves within the hair of these horses. And because of that, it reflects the light and when it does, their coats look like metal.
