John Wayne’s Legacy Has Been Tarnished Over Alleged Racism
Dec 2nd, 2019
When you lose a loved one, they are gone but they will never be forgotten. They will always be in our hearts and we will forever look up to them as our heroes. This is how we see them even when they are not with us anymore.
Scandals are normal to celebrities worldwide, even if they already passed away. It seems like these scandals will never leave them at peace. There are plenty of celebrities who will always be chased with these scandals. Even though Michael Jackson seems to be the target, there is another scandal that’s been heating up California.
John Wayne Airport is located in Orange County and this was named after a western actor that most of us know as “The Duke.”
Recently, there’s been a suggestion to rename the airport and strip Wayne of the honor that was given to him after a 1971 Playboy interview resurfaced. The actor made some comments that definitely divided the state.
This is a 48-year-old interview where the Oscar-winning actor said, “I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. We can’t all of the sudden get down on our knees and turn everything over to the leadership of the blacks. ” He also spoke about what he thought as a ‘perversion’ of the Hollywood films pertaining to homosexuals, just like the movies ‘Easy Rider’ and ‘Midnight Cowboy.
’ He also used a certain gay slur to describe the characters before he discussed the benefits of sexual intercourse with the opposite sex.
Wayne has been a star of many Western movies. He was also asked about the Native Americans which were usually portrayed as villains in most of his movies. He said, “I don’t feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them if that’s what you’re asking.
Our so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival. ” He said that Europeans needed new land and Native Americans were “selfishly trying to keep it for themselves. ”
The video was released for the public to see and this surprised a few people and sparked outrage.
This scandal erupted when a writer for the LA Times named Michael Hiltzik wrote an article reviving the interview in question. He was also the one who questioned whether Wayne still deserves to have the airport named after him.
In the middle of this chaos, Wayne might have passed away but his family will always be there to defend his legacy, especially his son, Ethan. Wayne’s son admitted that what his father said during this interview was horrible. But according to him, it would be an injustice to easily judge a person based on a single interview which has been used out of context.
Ethan said that some people try to contradict how his dad lived his life. How Wayne lived his life was the true description of who he really was. He said that his dad cared how well people did their job but he did not judge them based on their gender, race, or even their sexual orientation. Ethan recalls that Wayne would take everyone at face value.
Twitter became heated for some time and Wayne’s fans stood up for him against this scandal. No matter what was said, no one seems to want to change their minds regarding how they saw the late John Wayne.
