Harpy Eagle’s Massive Size Makes People Think It’s A Human In A Bird Suit
May 3rd, 2021
Although the ostrich is the biggest bird on the planet, it cannot be denied that eagles are equally amazing. They are just some of the most majestic bird species out there. However, you have to remember that some of these majestic birds are also dangerous. One of them is the Harpy eagle.
The Harpy Eagles are gigantic birds that rule the rainforest’s skies. Even though pictures and videos, it is always so fascinating to look at them and learn more about these birds.
One dangerous species of the eagle are endemic to many parts of Central and South America. They are known as the “royal-hawks” in Brazil. Wikipedia says that “the ‘royal-hawks’ is the largest and most powerful raptor found throughout its range, and among the largest extant species of eagles in the world.”
These birds can grow over 6.5 feet and their weight can range from 9 to 20 pounds. They can also live up to 35 years. With their size, there is no doubt that these birds are predators.
Wikipedia further explains that “The harpy eagle has very few natural predators as an adult. Harpy eagles prey on many species throughout the jungle, but studies have shown that they prefer large mammals like sloths and monkeys that frequent the upper canopy of the rain forest … However, harpies also feed on parrots, iguanas, tegus, snakes, and over 100 other prey species!”
What makes them dangerous predators are their large talons. They have the largest talons among any living eagle which could grow between 3-4 inches long. These deadly talons are known to be so strong that they can lift prey up that is equal to their own body weight.
But because of their physical agility, it makes them hard to catch that is why it is not easy to have the chance to see one up close.
That is why when Reddit user crg339 shared a photo of a Harpy Eagle, it quickly went viral. Not everyone has seen a Harpy Eagle, even in pictures.
After seeing the picture of the Harpy eagle for the first time, they are so huge that some people thought of them as humans in bird costumes. Some even thought that Harpy Eagles are not real, and are just fictional characters.
Reddit user ‘bigtoebigtoe’ wrote: “I feel like this bird is a spirit in charge of an ancient library in the desert who doesn’t let humans into it because it is of the opinion that humans only seek knowledge to use against other humans.”
Another Reddit user commented: “I feel like this bird has a female British accent and provides words of wisdom to those that seek it.”
Yes, they are massive birds, but they are not the biggest eagles out there. According to World Atlas, there are six other species of eagle that are larger than the harpy eagle.
These birds are named according to their wing-span – the Philippine Eagle (220 cm), Golden Eagle (220 cm), Australian Wedge-Tailed Eagle (230 cm), White-Tailed Eagle (244 cm), Steller’s Sea Eagle (250 cm), and the Haast’s Eagle (300 cm).
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, harpy eagles are a “Nearly Threatened” species. The number of these eagles is already decreasing and has the possibility of extinction in the near future.
But remember, that only humans can help extend the longevity of their existence.
