Five Dogs Mauled 61-Year-Old Florida Postal Worker While On Her Route

Postal workers experience both the best and the worst in their day-to-day life. One of the things that many have encountered is vicious and angry pets, especially dogs. Still, they have no choice but to put on a brave face, take deep breaths, and proceed. Sometimes, they get into accidents with these dogs.

And sadly, there are those who lose their lives while on duty. One of those was a horrific incident in Florida that left this 61-year-old postal worker dead after she was mauled by five dogs while on her route.

According to sheriff officials’ statement, Pamela Jane Rock of Melrose, Florida, was killed after being attacked by five dogs. It happened on a Sunday in northern Florida. While the postal worker was on her route her vehicle apparently broke down in the rural Interlachen Lake Estates area.

That’s when the dogs spotted her, they were probably sensing that she was a stranger and that’s when she was attacked…

The residents tried to intervene in the scene the moment they heard screaming. But they saw her on the ground and being ravaged by the animals. According to the witnesses’ statement to the authorities, the residents of the community did everything they could to stop the attack. Some even risked their own lives while trying to pull the dogs off of her.

At a news conference, Putnam County Sheriff Chief Deputy Colonel Joseph Wells said, “One of the neighbors even brought his firearm along and fired several shots into the air and to the ground in an attempt to disrupt the attack.”

Rock was already profusely bleeding by the time authorities arrived on the scene. Also, the dogs had been wrangled back to their owner’s property. First aid was immediately given and tourniquets were applied to the victim’s wounds. She was then taken to a nearby hospital. Rock was flown to a trauma center in Gainesville where she was in critical condition.

Sadly, her wound was too much for her body to handle. She couldn’t be saved and eventually succumbed to her injuries on Monday evening.

According to Wells, the dogs had escaped from their fenced-in yard before the vicious attack on the postal worker happened. The owner was aware of the situation and tried to help the victim by getting the dogs off of her during the attack. But the five dogs were overpowering them.

Wells added, “We are in frequent communications with the state attorney’s office as we explore options as far as possible for criminal cases as this case continues.” He added, “We have talked to those witnesses and we are working to confirm that these dogs are one and the same. We believe that there have been other calls for service regarding these dogs and we are reviewing these calls right now.”

Some of the worried neighbors told the police that the dogs often got loose and scared people in the neighborhood.

The horrific incident could have been prevented in the first place if only these dogs were secured by the owner within their property. Regardless of the reason behind the escape, it is a real tragedy.

The dog’s owner turned the animals over to the police. Reports say that soon, all five of them will be euthanized.
