For pregnant mothers, there is a long road ahead of them medically and in their lifestyle, but they usually have 9 months to prepare for the big day.

They can use these 40 weeks to get everything ready for the baby’s arrival, such as setting up the nursery and taking necessary time off of work.

For some moms, though, this day comes much sooner than 40 weeks, and the result is a premature baby that can come with complications all its own.

According to this baby’s mother Keri Barcellos-Putt, doctors had told her that her baby — a precious little girl named Dahlia — would not survive after being born at 28 weeks gestation.

“Water broke at 21 weeks and the only option doctors gave me was termination of the pregnancy,” Keri explains. “2 weeks of home bed rest and 5 weeks of hospital bed rest later, she was born via emergency c-section due to placental abruption. Doctors still thought she wouldn’t survive because she had no water for her lungs to develop.”

Dahlia, however, had other plans, and defied all of the doctors’ expectations.

Now, Dahlia is doing the unexpected — breastfeeding at just 32 weeks gestation! Her mom shared a photo of her daughter successfully latching on a Breastfeeding Mama Talk group page.

The photo also had a lot of meaning for other mothers who were processing the fears and heartbreak of giving birth prematurely, who now saw that success was possible.
